the facts about
the proposed
3-A Expressway
System

What Is being destroyed?
Baltimore's proposed 3-A system, more simply and
usualty dubbed "The Road," would bring some
23 miles of superhighways directly into residential
neighborhoods, parks, and historic districts, These
include eightlanesof concrete through Leakin Park,
Fells Point, and Ft. McHenry, plus six lanes through
many neighborhoods.

Why should you care?
Besides increased noise and air pollution, this
system will cost over $1.2 billion, with city residents
paying 18% ($216 million) of it partialty through
increased property taxes. Funds which should go to
schools, hearth care, police, and other urgent
social needs are now being diverted to pay for
road construction.
How great Is the Impact?
This system will increase pressures in all sections
of the city and counties for connecting and "improving" local streets and lor building boulevards
such as are proposed - and in some cases
already begun - along Northern Parkway, Moravia
Boulevard, Freemont. Hilton, Wabash-Northwest
Expressway, and Cold Spring Lane. About one-third
of Baltimore's entire surface area is now used for
roadways or vehicle care.

Who
M-A-O?
M.A·D, the Movement Against Destruction, is a
coalition of community organizations and individuals
dedicated to preventing the construction of interstate highways within the Baltimore Beltway.
M-A-O has also developed viable, citizen oriented,
alternatives for Baltimore's transportation needs.
For information about ioining, helping, or contacting
the speakers bureau for a presentation of
M-A-O's Side of the Road, write:

What Is M·A·D doing?
In October, 1972, M-A-D filed a lawsuit in federal
district court against "the road" builders on both
procedural and environmental grounds. This case is
now in litigation. The decision, expected this summer, is certain to be appealed . We will continue
to fight.

How Can You Help?
A legal battle of this magnitude, against formidable
odds, is expensive. We need $10,000 now. Please
send your contribution today.

This is no longer a local matter: a superhighway
in one part of the city or state will eventually
have its impact on every other part.
Many constructive altematives·- including
the much publicized rapid rail transit system have been neglected due to official emphasis
on highways.

Founded in 1968 as a coalition of 25 neighborhood and community groups, MAD's leaders included George and Carolyn Tyson, Barbara Mikulski, Walter Orlinsky, Norman Reeves, and Parren Mitchell.

The complete MAD collection at the University of Baltimore consists of 9 linear feet of records, which are described in an online collection database. The complete collection has also been digitized at the folder level and is available in this guide. For this exhibit, 32 documents have been selected from the complete collection.</text>
